- W2314495382 abstract "A preliminary investigation into the feasibility of flying a rotary-powered aircraft on the surface of Mars is presented in this paper. The ability to fly provides a very different perspective and a wide flight range while the ability to hover allows us to focus on specific targets or complete prescribed tasks with ease. We explored the performance limitations on flight due to the availability of energy on Mars. Our design approach involved holding the Mach number at the tip, and the flight time constant. Using fundamental relations and basic helicopter theory, an optimal rotor radius could be extracted for a fixed vehicle mass. From the established rotor radius and vehicle mass, we were able to derive an adjustable mass budget. Through refinement of motor, battery, and airfoil choices, the team can now complete a blade-element analysis of possible rotor blade configurations in order to produce the optimal characteristics for rotary flight on Mars. The study concluded that a Martian helicopter is fully within reach of present power and flight technologies, allowing for several configurations that can carry scientific payload." @default.
