- W2314652597 abstract "Continued use of lily-pad traps for capturing ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus) in a forested area near Cloquet, Minnesota, has shown this technique to be highly effective during all but the mid-May to mid-August period of the year. A funnel made of 1-inch poultry netting proved more efficient than a swinging-wire gate, but also led to increased injury to grouse resulting from trampling by snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus) captured in the same traps. Since 1959, several improvements have been made in mirror traps, including a more efficient triggering mechanism based on a standard mouse snap trap, and to reduce trapped-bird injuries, 'A-inch hardware cloth, burlap-covered sides with a solid metal gate. Using eight colors of anodized butt-end aluminum bands, more than 4,000 ruffed grouse can be individually marked for subsequent identification in the forest. A punch card system facilitates the identification of color-banded grouse observed in the forest. Continuing experiences in trapping and marking ruffed grouse in the Cloquet area of northern Minnesota as part of a study of forestry-wildlife relationships, and espe- cially in support of the Grousar radio- tracking project (Marshall and Kupa 1963), have led to several improvements over tech- niques described earlier (Gullion 1961, Gul- lion et al. 1962). This project is under the supervision of William H. Marshall, whose encouragement and support are gratefully acknowledged. TRAPPING" @default.
