- W2314822012 abstract "Ten earth pressure cells and two pore water pressure transducers have been installed along the face of a 30 foot tall spillway sidewall to measure lateral earth and pore water pressures over time in the compacted clayey backfill. The spillway is a new labyrinth structure constructed as part of the Tongue River Dam Rehabilitation Project in Big Horn County, Montana. The sidewall is a counterfort wall that was assumed to be rigid for purposes of lateral loading estimation and design. Wall rigidity arises from stiffness offered by the counterfort design and the massive roller compacted concrete fill upon which the wall is founded. The portion of the wall instrumented was backfilled with a lean clay constituting the core of the dam. Compaction was achieved with both jumping-jack hand compactors used immediately adjacent to the wall and a vibratory sheep's foot roller. The wall was designed to resist lateral loads induced by the self-weight of the clay, compaction of the backfill clay, water pressure due to soil saturation and swell pressures in the clay. Data collected to-date show the development of earth pressure as compaction proceeds up the wall and the decay or relaxation of this pressure with time. Compaction induced pressures are compared to values calculated using several design solutions. Steady state earth pressures, measured after relaxation is essentially complete, are compared to at-rest values for this material. The time for relaxation to occur is discussed in light of design and operation considerations." @default.
