- W2314845038 abstract "The F/A-18 was redesigned to meet the special Swiss requirement of 5'000 Flight Hours (FH) usage. The center fuselage was reinforced by titanium bulkheads, and by titanium dorsal longerons instead of aluminum as used for the original F/A-18 designed for the US Navy. The inner wing was considerably improved using a lot of cold worked holes, interference fit fasteners, and structural reinforcements. During the Swiss ASIP study based on MIL-HDBK-1530 for all the fracture critical parts, the USAF damage tolerance based on MIL-A-87221 had to be demonstrated by analysis. The structural changes are to be qualified by a full scale fatigue test with a modern and efficient test set-up using 68 push-pull actuators. The test has already completed the first service life cycle of 5'000 FH which took less then seven months. The test article is inspected during the fatigue cycling for early damage detection. In intervals of 1'000 FH, a detailed inspection in several critical areas is performed using NDT. Three platforms integrated into the test set-up improve accessibility to the test article significantly. This enables us to detect early cracks at structural components. The first crack was discovered at the outboard lug set of the inboard leading edge flap at 3'000 FH. This area showed cracks in other tests and is also a focal point in F/A-18 fleets operated by the US Navy and several export customers. So far, in the Swiss F/A-18 fleet no cracks were found (the fleet leader has accumulated roughly 1'000 FH). The Swiss configuration has parabolic fillets at the lug whereas all the other configurations have circular fillets . The Swiss outer wing is highly loaded in the test. At 4'000 FH, a failure in the wing fold transmission was observed. The broken gear in section 18 was analyzed. Boeing qualified the wing fold transmission as life limited part with a potential life of 4'000 FH to account for the severe Swiss usage." @default.
