• W2315270934 abstract "The hypophysis of the puffer, Fugu stictonotus, was studied using juvenile specimens treated with goitrogen and adult specimens in various stages of sexual maturation. The hypophysis is composed of four portions: the rostral pars distalis (RPD), the proximal pars distalis (PPD), the pars intermedia (PI), and the neurohypophysis. The RPD consists of three glandular cells: lead hematoxylin (PbH) stainable acidophil cell (A1), aldehyde fuchsin (AF) and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) positive basophil cells (B1) and carminophil cells (C). Since the B1 cells in the juvenile fish treated with thiouracil display a marked hyperfunction such as hypertrophy, hyperplasia, degranulation and mitosis, they may correspond to the thyrotrophs (TSH cells). The PPD contains orange G stainable cells (A2), and AF and also PAS positive basophil cells (B2). The B2 cells in the juvenile fish are chromophobes, but show an increase in number, size and affinity for AF and PAS reaction with gonadal maturation. They may thus be identified as gonadotrophs (GTH cells). Two types of cells are found in the PI: PbH stainable cyanophil cells (I1) and weakly PAS positive acidophil cells (I2). The function of these two mucoid cells and the neurohypophysial structure of the present species are discussed in comparison with those of other teleosts." @default.
