David Riesman has informed us that we are becoming excessively other-directed,2) while William H. Whyte, Jr. tells us in no uncertain terms that our Protestant Ethic is replaced by a Social Ethic, as he terms it, which dictates that being a good team player is the highest good.3) More recently, Vance Packardhas documented the attempts of each social stratum of our society to imitate the manners, actions, and even thoughts, of those perched on higher rungs of the status ladder.4) This list of social critics making the same general point could easily be lengthened, but perhaps enough instances have been cited to document the current concern over the apparent decline of individualism. As this concern has grown, there has also grown a concomitant effort on the part of behavioral and social scientists to understand the principles underlying conformity and deviation. Although thoughtful men of all ages have devoted attention to such problems, it is only recently that any degree of systematic insight has been achieved. Let us briefly trace, then, some landmarks of special relevance to our topic. Hopefully, we shall thereby gain sufficient perspective to attempt an extrapolation of past and current research trends into the near future.
