- W2315809232 abstract "Event Abstract Back to Event The Amygdala: Seeing and Looking Sara L. Gonzalez-Andino1*, Christopher Laine2, Rolando Grave De Peralta Menendez1 and Kathalin M. Gothard2 1 Geneva University Hospital, University Medical Centre, Switzerland 2 University of Arizona, United States Our eyes fixate the parts of the visual world labeled by the brain as perceptually salient. Visual saliency is driven by bottom-up factors pertaining to the perceptual characteristic of the stimulus and top-down factors that depend on behavioral relevance, goals and expertise. The amygdala likely contributes to top-down perceptual saliency given its well-established role in responding to emotional relevance of stimuli. Other brain structures known to signal saliency also influence the allocation of visual attention manifested in eye movements. Although the amygdala is not part of the classical neural circuit controlling eye movements, amygdala lesions cause aberrant visual scanning of images with socio-emotional relevance. Here we show that the amygdala of primates contains goal-related and general-purpose eye fixation neurons. Goal-related fixation neurons mark the onset of task related saccades while general-purpose neurons show continuous activity interrupted only by saccades. Single unit activity in amygdala accurately predicts eye fixations during the free-viewing of faces, objects and landscapes. Prediction is significantly better for faces where a bottom-up computational saliency model fails. Our results support a role for the amygdala in defining perceptual saliency and might explain the mechanism of abnormal fixation patterns in autism or schizophrenia and in patients with structural damage to the amygdala. They also suggest a more direct involvement of the amygdala in oculo-motor control than previously considered.
