- W2315961006 abstract "Manninger (11) reported that capsulated cultures of Pasteurella multocida were virulent, nonphagocytized, and immunogenic for mice, chickens, and pigeons, whereas noncapsulated strains were avirulent and phagocytized, but immunogenic. De Kruif (2) described fluorescent and blue colonies of P. multocida isolated from rabbit septicemia. Organisms from fluorescent colonies were highly virulent and nonagglutinable in immune serum. Organisms from blue colonies were of low virulence but agglutinated in immune serum. Hughes (8), using avian strains, confirmed De Kruif's observations and also described an intermediate type of colony. Priestley (12), using mice as the immunized host, emphasized the importance of using highly virulent capsulated organisms in preparing an efficient vaccine. Yaw and Kakavas (14) reported that crude capsular material from fluorescent colonies immunized chickens and mice, and that noncapsulated organisms from blue colonies immunized chickens but not mice. According to London and Yaw (10), fluorescent and blue colonial variants are qualitatively identical in their antigenic structure, but differ quantitatively with regard to one antigen. Elberg and Cheng-Lee Ho (3), using cultures from swine and buffalo, demonstrated that the type of medium influenced the dissociation of fluorescent to nonfluorescent colonies. We have observed that P. multocida when first isolated from cases of fowl cholera produced either fluorescent, intermediate, blue, or sectored colonies." @default.
