- W2316010211 abstract "Host-parasite interactions of caryophyllaeid cestodes and aquatic oligochaetes were assessed and results were related to infections in natural populations. Studies focused on the effect of infection with cary- ophyllaeids on intermediate host longevity and the relationship between parasite intensity and host and parasite survival. Four host-parasite systems were utilized: Biacetabulum biloculoides and Hunterella nodulosa in Lim- nodrilus hoffmeisteri; and Glaridacris catostomi in Ilyodrilus templetoni and Tubifex tubifex. Limnodrilus hoffmneisteri is a good host for H. nodulosa with 90% of the annelids and 88% of the cestodes surviving at a time when metacestodes are infective to the fish host. Biacetabulum biloculoides caused high mortality in L. hoJ'meisteri (which may be related to rupturing of the host body wall), resulting in a loss of the majority of the cestodes when infective procercoids were present in the parasite population. Suitability of both I. templetoni and T. tubifex as hosts for G. catostomi was augmented by increased parasite intensity, with the group possessing the highest initial parasite intensity showing the greatest survival of cestodes and oligochaetes. This could be another component of the intermediate host specificity shown by caryophyllaeids. Both I. templetoni and T. tubifex infected with G. catostomi exhibited a decrease in parasite intensity over time, thereby producing a low mean parasite intensity at the end of the experiments. Possible factors responsible for mortality rates in the caryophyllaeid population include host immune responses, physiological incompatibility between host and parasite, and intraspecific interactions." @default.
