- W2316078851 abstract "AN ALMOST unbelievable collection of wartime applications for nylon explained the denial of that fiber to civilians. Parachutes and mosquito netting told only a part of the story. The famed hosiery material went into rot covers, camouflage cloth, into tents that withstood a 100-mile gale: Mae West life vests, flak suits of multiple layers, exposure suits, resin-coated foxhole beds; flak curtains, cables, line-throwing kits for the Navy and Coast Guard: escape parachutes about 20 feet in diameter; and lining for airplane wing fuel tanks. The nylon fuel tank idea is a development credited to the Glenn L. Martin Co. of Baltimore. The chemical fiber was used as a thin layer, sandwiched in between other layers of synthetic rubber to form walls for the fuel which prevented the seepage of gasoline. The nylon-rubber barrier also held back fumes, and the idea was widely adopted for military planes. The military evidently has not disclosed the whole story ..." @default.
