- W2316175573 abstract "What is the origin of language? Supported by a growing acceptance of the notion of embodiment, it is quite natural to think the emergence of spoken language is deeply related to the human perception of the world. Some researchers claimed that sound symbolism might be the key to understanding the link between protolanguage and language (e.g. Ramachandran & Hubbard, 2001). Although the phenomenon of sound symbolism has been extensively studied, the neural representation of sound-symbolic words is yet to be revealed. Arata et al. (2010) examined how Japanese sound-symbolic words are processed in the brain, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In their study, participants were presented short video clips depicting a person moving across the screen accompanied with sound-symbolic motion words (mimetic words) and non-sound-symbolic words (adverbs and verbs). Stronger activation was observed in the right posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) for mimetic words in comparison to verbs and adverbs. Based on the prior finding that the right pSTS is also activated by nonlinguistic environmental sounds (Thierry et al., 2003), Arata and colleagues argued that the processing of these sounds and soundsymbolic words might involve a common mechanism. However, the pSTS is also known to be related to several other cognitive functions, and it is somewhat difficult to draw an unambiguous interpretation that sound-symbolic words are processed as environmental sounds. For example, the pSTS activation has been observed in many studies on biological motion (e.g." @default.
