- W2316177818 abstract "Dalechampia websteri from Costa Rica and Panama, although superficially similar to members of sect. Triphyllae, appears to be more closely related to members of sect. Dioscoreifoliae. Dalechampia arenalensis from Costa Rica, although superficially similar to members of sect. Dioscoreifoliae, appears to be more closely related to members of sects. Triphyllae and Scandentes. When examining specimens of Dalechampia L. on loan from MO, I discovered several specimens from Costa Rica and Panama that did not appear to belong to any described species from that region. During field investigations in Mesoamerica on the reproductive biology of Dalechampia, I was able to collect additional material of these apparently new taxa. Based on examination of plants in the field and material preserved in FAA, it is clear that they represent two previously undescribed species. Dalechampia websteri Armbruster, sp. nov. (fig. 1).-TYPE: Costa Rica, Prov. Heredia, Finca La Selva, ca. 3 km SE Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui, 10?24'N, 83?59'W, along the East Trail and north edge of the successional strips, forest-scrub edge, ca. 45 m, 21 Dec 1979, W. S. Armbruster and A. L. Herzig 79207 (holotype: DAV; isotypes: ALA, CR, MO, NY). Differt ab aliis speciebus generis foliis trifoliolatis, bracteolis involucelli staminalis 4, bracteis involucralibus albis unguiculatis profunde trilobis; ab D. juruana bracteis involucralibus majoribus; ab D. subintegra basibus stylorum puberulis. Clambering vine; stems twining, terete, 0.51 mm thick at growing tip, hirsute with ? deciduous straw-colored hairs ca. 2 mm long and tomentose with persistent recurved non-stimulous hairs ca. 0.2 mm long. Stipules reflexed, persistent, lanceolate, gland-tipped, 2-4 mm long, 0.3-0.5 mm broad, margins with a few sessile reddish glands; leaves palmately trifoliolate; petiolules terete, pubescent as the stem, 1-2.5 mm long, 0.5-1 mm thick; leaflet blades chartaceous, sparsely and persistently sericeous on both surfaces, with shorter hairs on major veins and on abaxial face; margins sparsely glandular denticulate to sinuate, middle leaflet elliptic-oblong to obovate, acute to acuminate, 6-12 cm long, 1.5-4 cm broad; lateral leaflets asymmetrically lanceolate-ovate, of similar size to middle leaflet; major veins 5-7 from base, secondaries ascending, tertiaries scalariform. Inflorescences solitary on axillary short-shoots 10-18 cm long; short-shoots with 1-3 reduced leaves 3-6 cm long; peduncles 2-3 cm long at anthesis. Involucral bracts subequal, slightly convex and white at anthesis, ovate, deeply 3-lobed to middle (middle lobe 1.5-2 cm long, lateral lobes 1-1.5 cm long), cuneate at base, distinctly clawed with 3 prominent veins (2 additional prominent veins diverge outward from the lateral veins ca. 1/4 the distance from the base), limb 2.5-4 cm long, 2-3.5 cm broad, claw 2-5 mm long, 3-4 mm broad, glabrescent on both surfaces, veins and margins pubescent with dense short, incurved hairs and scattered long hairs, margins plane, glandular-denticulate; stipules of proximal bract broadly lanceolate acute, 10-14 mm long, 3-5 mm broad, striateveined, hirsute-sericeous on abaxial face, sparsely hispidulous on adaxial face, veins pubescent with short, incurved hairs; stipules of distal bract similar to those of proximal bract but ovate, 12-16 mm long, 4-6 mm broad. Pistillate cymule sessile; involucel of 2 striateveined, glabrescent bractlets with margins irregularly denticulate to sinuate, eglandular; abaxial bractlet simple, 4-5 mm high, 5-7 mm wide; adaxial bractlet shallowly to deeply bilobed, overlapped by margins of abaxial bractlet, 2-3 mm high, 4-6 mm wide. Staminate cymule with stout hirtellous peduncle 2.5-5 mm long, 1.5-2 mm thick; involucel of 2 pairs of ? decussate, distinct bractlets [proximal (=lateral) bractlets offset, shifted away from resiniferous bractlets], glabrescent except near base, striate-" @default.
