- W2316239169 abstract "I T WAS TIlE DISCOVERY of the New World and the establishment of the Casa de Contratacion in Seville in 1503 which transforined a heretofore small Andalusian river port into the most famous and important city in sixteenth-century Spain. During the Middle Ages, Seville played a secondary role in the busy Mediterranean trade since the port of C'adiz, located directly on the sea, offered superior maritime facilities against which Seville could not compete.1 Italian ships and galleys en route to Flanders and England stopped regularly at Cadiz and olnly infrequently made the difficult trip up the Guadalquivir River to Seville.2 In the sixteenth century, however, C'adiz lost out to her rival and the city on the Guadalquivir became the door and port of the Indies, as Lope de Vega called her in his Peregrino enl sit patria.3 The fabulous riches that arrived from the Indies attracted to her banks individuals from all parts of Spain and from the rest of Europe, and she soon became a new Babylonia.
