- W2316262024 abstract "Launch vehicles are employed with core and clustered strap-on boosters as lower stage to provide large thrust during lift-off. Because of these configurations, interaction of multi jets is encountered, especially at high altitudes, due to pluming of jets. The interaction of jets lead to reverse flow towards the vehicle base resulting in base heating and thrust. To evolve design solution to the above problems, clear understanding of the flow field around the base is essential. In the present study, interaction of twinjets emanating from strapon boosters of a generic launch vehicle is studied experimentally in High Altitude Jet Simulation facility (HAJS). The complete flow field is visualized through schlieren photography. Pitot pressure survey along the vehicle axis from the shock inflexion point towards the base revealed the existence of reverse flow, which is predominant in the vicinity of shock inflexion point, diffuses before reaching the base. The base pressure measurements also confirmed the above results.
