Ethnocentrism, xenophobia, and the tendency to personalize sociological information make it difficult for many students to expand their awareness and to view phenomena from a different perspective. Role-taking is necessary for understanding and appreciating the values, behaviors, and attitudes of persons and for interpersonal functioning and cooperation (Ellis, Streeter, and Engelbrecht 1983; Mead 1934). Despite its importance to learning and development, however, Ellis et al. (1983, p. 367) note that surprisingly little attention has been paid to ... the acquisition of role taking as a learned skill (emphasis added). In this paper we introduce a teaching method designed to enhance students' awareness of social issues and problems by developing their abilities to take the role of others.
