- W2316375327 abstract "Twitch contraction of the frog (Rana catesbeiana) rectus abdominis muscle in response to single stimulation of short duration (0.3 msec) was suppressed completely by Zn2+ (10-8 M), Cd2+ (10-3M) or curare (10-5M), in contrast with that the contraction in response to single stimulation of long duration (3.0 msec) was potentiated by the ions and was not affected by the curare. The results suggest that short single stimulation indirectly brings about twitch contraction with stimulating nerve elements and long single stimulation does directly with stimulating muscle fibers and that the metal ions probably act on nerve terminals to block neuromuscular transmission on the one hand and, on the other hand, do on muscle fibers to potentiate twitch contraction. The suppressed twitch contration in response to single stimulation was recovered gradually after washing off the metal ions, and this recovery was markedly accelerated by treating muscle with cysteine (5 mM). The SH group at nerve terminals may be involved in the suppressing action of the metal ions. The ACh-contracture of the muscle was also potentiated by the Zn2+ or Cd2+, but this potentiation was not observed in the presence of physostigmine (3×10-5M). Both carbachol-contracture and K-contracture were not significantly affected by the ions. The heavy metal ions may have another different action; inhibition of cholineesterase activities." @default.
