- W2316446054 abstract "A fatal infection with tapeworm cysts in a dog is described. The cysts were present within the abdominal and thoracic cavities and also in the liver and lung tissues. No scolices were found. Comparison of the gross and histologic structure of the cysts with coenuri of Multiceps serialis and with tetrathyridia of Mesocestoides showed that the cysts from the dog definitely belonged to the family Taeniidae and that in gross morphology and manner of proliferation they most closely resembled M. serialis. Structural similarities and differences between taeniid and mesocestoidid larvae are discussed and illustrated. A histopathological description of the dog's liver, lungs, spleen, and kidney is presented. Massive infections with larval taeniids in dogs have been reported but rarely. Early records are contained in the book by Neumann (1914), who described them under the heading of parasitic ascites. No illustration, histologic studies of the parasites, or specific identification are included in his account, but the author suggests that the cysts represent an abnormal growth form of dithyridia. Recently we received a Borzoi (Russian wolfhound) bitch which had died as a result of such an infection. Our observations on the gross appearance of the larvae are in close agreement with the description by Neumann (1914), but the identity of the cysts with larvae of Mesocestoides is questionable for reasons given below. No taeniid scolices were found in Neumann's or in our material. In this report we shall describe the infection in the dog, the gross and microscopic structure of the cysts, and compare the larval stages with those of certain taeniids, particularly Multiceps serialis, and with Mesocestoides." @default.
