- W2316448272 abstract "In the late nineteenth century, in the farthest reaches of America's Western empire, on a bleak island thousands of miles from the nearest city of any size, men labored in a killing factory, producing for the global market. That this factory had neither walls nor machinery made it no less efficient an operation: tasks were specialized and output high. It was a bloody business, and at the summer's end hundreds of screeching cats wandered through the rotting offal, producing a scene almost unbearable to the human nose and eye. The raw materials of this industrial enterprise, Alaskan fur seals, were unrefined. The tools—clubs and knives—were primitive. But the profits were outrageous: between 1870 and 1890, the owners of the Alaska Commercial Company pocketed twenty million dollars. This fur harvest took place every summer throughout the nineteenth century on the tiny Pribilof Islands of St. George and St. Paul, just north of the Aleutian island chain that stretches between Russia and America. The Pribilofs have little to recommend them as human habitation, and would have had no settlers except for their one unique feature: their rocky beaches served as a refuge for hundreds of thousands of fur seals, who arrived every year to bear pups and to mate. Coveted throughout the United States and Europe, sealskins commanded high prices among the fashion conscious, making the Pribilofs one of the most valuable regions of Alaska. In fact, it was the bounty of these islands that first proved wrong those naysayers who had scoffed at the United States purchase of Alaska in 1867." @default.
