- W2316500852 abstract "In general the free energies for the transfer of copper(II) ion from water to the lower alcohols are very positive, ranging from 1.0 in ethylene glycol to 16.5 kcal in t-butyl alcohol. Functions in the dielectric constant fail to account for the influence of the solvent upon the free energy of transfer. However, the linear free energy model of Krygowski and Fawcett for Lewis acid-base interactions provides an adequate correlation between essential variables when the donor basicity is represented by the Kamlet-Taft beta value of the alcohol. Observed influences by the solvent upon the thermodynamic quantities for the transfer of ionic solutes from water solutions to nonaqueous media are usually interpreted from either of two viewpoints: (a) fundamental calculations for the energetics of solvation of the bare ions in which electrostatic contributions to the free energy are based upon parametric functions in the ionic radius and bulk dielectric constant of the solvent; and (b) semiempirical treatments of the medium effect in terms of a specific model for Lewis acid-base interactions using parameters related to solvent basicity and the acceptor properties of the solute. The first approach has been successfully applied to calculations of free energies of solvation in aprotic media for simple monovalent ions, including several group IA cations, monoatomic anions, and quaternary ammonium ions (Abraham and Liszi, 1978). Representative of the second procedure is the description of ionic solvation in aprotic solvents developed by Krygowski and Fawcett (1975) and its extension to the special case of the reference electrolyte, tetraphenylarsonium tetraphenylborate (Kolling, 1980). In the present report a modified form of the second viewpoint is applied to the analysis of experimental values for the free energies of transfer of copper(II) perchlorate from water to other hydroxylic solvents." @default.
