- W2316509157 abstract "Event Abstract Back to Event Face Primary Somatosensory Cortex Motor Representations: Effects of Intraoral Manipulation Limor Avivi-Arber1*, Jey-Chang Lee1 and Barry Sessle1 1 University of Toronto, Dentistry, Department of Physiology, Canada The neuroplastic capacity of the motor representations within face primary motor cortex (face M1) has been well documented, but no study has addressed the neuroplastic capacity of motor representations within face primary somatosensory cortex (face S1). We used intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) and recordings of evoked electromyographic (EMG) activity to test if the ICMS defined jaw (left & right anterior digastric, LAD, RAD) and tongue (genioglossus, GG) motor representations within the cytoarchitectonically defined face S1 are altered by trimming or extraction of a mandibular incisor in adult male Sprague Dawley rats. Under local and halothane anaesthesia, an extraction group (n=8) had extraction of a mandibular right incisor; a sham extraction group (n=6) had surgery with no extraction; trim (n=6) and trim recovery (n=6) groups had a mandibular right incisor trimmed 1-2mm out of occlusion every 2 days for 1 week; a sham trim group (n=7) had incisor trimming that did not affect the occlusion; and a naive group (n=6) had neither extraction nor trimming. Systematic ICMS was carried out bilaterally under ketamine anaesthesia 1 week following extraction or sham extraction, 1 day following the last trimming day in the trim and sham trim groups and 1 week following the last trimming day in the trim recovery group. Cortical sites from which ICMS evoked EMG activity in LAD, RAD and/or GG and onset latencies of the evoked EMG activities were noted. LAD, RAD and GG onset latencies were comparable to those previously reported within face M1. Under similar stimulation parameters, only dental extraction had a significant effect on the ICMS defined features of RAD within the contralateral face S1 (see Table) (*repeated measures ANOVA, post hoc Bonferroni: p<0.05). Trimming and sham trimming resulted in decreased LAD representation within the ipsilateral face S1 that reversed 1 week later (ANOVA, Bonferroni p<0.06). Our novel findings suggest that face S1 does possess motor outputs that can manifest neuroplasticity in association with intraoral manipulations. fig1 Conference: B.R.A.I.N. platform in Physiology poster day 2009, Toronto, ON, Canada, 16 Dec - 16 Dec, 2009.
