- W2316543395 abstract "Pigmentation patterns are commonly assumed to be difficult characters to use in phylogenetic studies because of pattern variability within individuals and species. Most studies, however, have focused on the variability of adult pigmentation pattern, where pattern element homologies are most difficult to recognize. By observing the development of pigmentation patterns in larval, juvenile, and adult centrarchids, the homologous elements of the lateral barring pattern have been hypothesized. This has permitted the comparison of pattern ontogenies in a phylogenetic context. Although pigmentation is often disregarded as a source of characters containing historical information, the congruence of many of these characters with a phylogeny of centrarchids suggests their utility. The ontogenies of pigmentation patterns in 26 centrarchid species are described. Several equally parsimonious patterns of character evolution are implied by the phylogeny, and these are discussed. Pigmentation diversity among adult centrarchids is produced by the alteration of homologous components and rarely by the addition of novel characteristics. A common mechanism underlying pattern formation is suggested by pigmentation similarities among centrarchids." @default.
