• W2316574775 abstract "Introduction and objectives: An estimated 16-27% of hypertensive patients have treatment Resistant Hypertension(RH).(1-2) Further additional medications bring concerns of tolerance, side-effects, costs and compliance. Recently, a novel technique of selectively ablating renal artery sympathetic nerves has been shown to reduce blood pressure in these patients.(3-4) The objectives are to describe our initial experience of using this technique to treat our patients. Methods: Between September 2011 and January 2012, 11 consecutive RH patients who underwent Renal Artery Denervation at National Heart Institute of Malaysia were included in the study. 5 patients(45.4%) were Malay, 3(27.3%) Chinese and 3(27.3%) Indian. They were followed-up at 2 weeks, 1 month and 3 months post-procedure with Office Blood Pressure(BP), 24-hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure(ABPM), blood and urine tests. Results: We performed 4.6 ± 1.6 ablations on the Right renal artery and 4.2 ± 1.6 ablations on the Left. Mean procedure-time was 61.9 ± 8.6 minutes and contrast use of 170 ± 45 mL. There was a reduction of mean systolic Office BP from 184 ± 14 at baseline to 166 ± 28 at 2weeks(P=0.09), 161 ± 30 at 1month(P=0.013) and 167 ± 20 at 3months(P=0.029). The ABPM was also lower from 156/85 ± 18/16 at baseline to 156/84 ± 18/14 at 2weeks(p=0.54), 141/78 ± 14/14 at 1month(p=0.222) and 142/80 ± 16/16 at 3months(p=0.606) respectively. There was no significant change in renal function and number of medications. Conclusion: Catheter-based Renal Artery denervation seems to be effective at reducing BP of RH patients at short-term follow-up with minimal adverse effects.
