The conducting process of a whole survey consists of three main phases: field data acquisition of Rayleigh wave, dispersion curves extraction from acquired data, and inversion of near-surface structure (including layer thickness, P-wave, and S-wave velocity). The last two phases need corresponding algorithms. The purpose of this study is to give a dime tour of methods of dispersion calculation from field data and its inversion, and then a model test is presented to show the effectiveness of the adopted genetic algorithm (GA) inversion with multi-mode dispersion curves, finally a real world example is inverted using dispersion curves calculated by linear Radon transform and GA. The inversion result is compared with adjacent borehole test; agreement of the two outcomes validates the method. Summarization of the pros and cons of the method are also objectively listed.
