- W2316580873 abstract "IN THE SUMMER Of 1937 the Japanese followed an beam into China. Their ideal, though regarded with understandable skepticism in the Western world, was none the less real for them. Self-convinced amid a rising crescendo of patriotic idealism dinned in schools, press, radio, and everyday talk in Japan, millions of Japanese believed that it was their patriotic duty to perform a surgical operation in China, necessary and good only for Japan, but for China, and indeed for all of Asia. This is a study of three climactic years of ideal and operation, 1937-1940, the Japanese tried to keep the two in harmony. It becomes a testament to the pitfalls of surgery, for it will be observed that although conditions were extremely favorable, the ideal being resplendent with natural appeal to the Chinese, and non-Chinese interference being slight, the crusaders nevertheless came to the brink of chaos. They half saved themselves by a mental gymnastic which I have chosen to call an ideological somersault, but they could hardly be the same again. An obscure incident, described in a Tokyo War Crimes Trial affidavit, strikes the keynote. The occasion is a speech made by the commanding general of the Japanese expeditionary forces, General Matsui Iwane, in captured Nanking, on December 18, 1937. In his speech, which was part of a memorial service for those who died in the campaign, General Matsui strongly emphasized that not only the souls of the Japanese dead, but also those of the Chinese dead should be worshipped and appeased-such alone is the foundation for the establishment of peace and harmony between Japan and China and also the real spirit of the Greater Asia Doctrine. However, the testimony continues, as there was enough time, it was decided that the memorial service for the departed spirits of the Chinese would be held on another occasion.' Why enough time to do justice to the Chinese brethren? Operational difficulties-in this case, a Chinese would say, too busy with the rape and pillage of Nanking." @default.
