- W2316636788 abstract "Even though a great deal of data has been collected on the incidence of various environmental pollutants in seabirds (e.g. Bourne 1976), and on the toxic effects of these chemicals on captive animals (e.g. Ohlendorf, Riseborough & Vermeer 1978; Koeman & Stasse-Wolthuis 1978) there is yet no direct experimental evidence from wild seabirds to show whether they have a significant impact on survival and breeding. This paper reports the results of dosing wild puffins (Fratercula arctica) with a polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB). This class of chemical was chosen because it has been implicated as at least a partial cause of seabird mortality (Holdgate 1971; Parslow & Jefferies 1973; Koeman et al. 1973), and also because PCBs are widespread in many forms of wildlife-occurring at high levels in, for example, gannets (Sula bassana) found dead (Parslow, Jefferies & Hanson 1973), yet their exact role in reproduction is uncertain (Blus et al. 1971; Gilman et al. 1977; Furness & Hutton 1980). The main aim of this study was to determine the effects that a sub-lethal dose of a PCB had on puffin breeding success and survival when tissue concentrations were similar to those normally found in living puffins and in those found dead. To some extent the study was restricted by the limitations which licensing authorities placed on the numbers of birds used, and the levels of PCB that could be implanted. Another limitation was that only one adult of each pair was dosed. However, any adverse effects on one adult would have been reflected in breeding success or chick weight, since one adult cannot raise a chick single-handed (Harris 1978). The study did not attempt to investigate the possibility that PCB toxicity in the field would result from the accumulation of particular isomers of PCB." @default.
