- W231669306 abstract "According to the 16th annual Gallup Poll (1984), parents and other community members identified discipline as the biggest problem in the public schools. Teachers, counselors, administrators, and other educational professionals also are concerned about discipline as a major problem (Robledo, 1980/1981). Discipline seems to be a greater problem in middle schools than in either elementary or high schools. According to the Violent Schools/ Safe Schools (National Institute of Education, 1978) study, the proportion of middle school students involved in attacks on each other and on teachers was more than twice as great as that of senior high students (2.1% versus 1.0%). On a questionnaire designed to collect data from 11 selected metropolitan school districts representing the state of Texas, school personnel reported that they were concerned about the increase in disruptive behaviors of students in their middle teens who were in junior high school (Robledo, 1980/1981). Counselors are responsible for providing leadership to teachers and other school personnel, and they seek techniques to use and recommend that will have positive effects on student behavior. One procedure, relaxation training, shows promise for improving the self-management skills of children (Braud, 1978; Brennan, 1983/1984; Rivera & Omizo, 1980). Relaxation training teaches children to elicit the relaxation response when fear and anxiety arise. Counselors who use the concept assume that students exposed to excessively disturbing stimulation (e.g., emotional or physical trauma) can use natural biological processes to reduce the disturbing consequences. Through self-regulation training, children can learn to control their lives and be responsible for their behavior. The relaxation state may be induced by various techniques, some of which are appropriate for the classroom. The techniques include progressive relaxation (Jacobson, 1974), autogenics (Luthe, 1969), breathing exercises (Spreads, 1978), visual imagery (Bry, 1972; Lazarus, 1977), meditation (Tart, 1972), the quieting reflex (Stroebel, 1967), certain approaches" @default.
