- W2316841685 abstract "In recent years, a growing volume of literature has appeared on two distinct but related topics that have important applications to the theory of demand. One group of writings, identified especially with the names: Leontief, Sono, Strotz and Gorman, is concerned with the concept of functional separability; and the emphasis here is on development of the formal conditions for the separation of subsets of variables from a prime set representing the independent variables of a complicated function in many variables (as, for example, a utility function). The work in this area is, of course, largely mathematical, although the authors are at pains to point out the relationship of their discoveries to problems of theoretical and applied economics. The studies in the second group deal with the question of complementarity-but in a way that leads to a fundamental synthesis of production theory and consumption theory. Professor Hicks has made the suggestion that consumer preferences are established in terms of certain ends or objectives which are not, in general, commodities. Rather, commodities are seen as the means to the attainment of objectives. Since this construction indicates an indirect linkage between utility and the individual commodities, it has formal similarity to the problems handled by separable functions. Morishima, seeing this, made the mathematical translation and extended the analysis in some interesting directions; it is to him we owe the neat generalization of production and consumption theory. The present paper accepts the basic framework established by Hicks and Morishima, but attempts to carry the discussion into some new areas. To do this, certain assumptions of the earlier analysis must be changed. However, close reading of the literature discloses that changes can be made which make the model more reasonable" @default.
