- W2316952014 abstract "Sandia National Laboratories has the responsibility for the system integration of for the United States' nuclear weapon stockpile. Over the last several decades, Sandia has developed a methodology and a formal process to design and assess the of nuclear weapons. Part of the methodology is to inherently design measures into a weapon; the blueprint for this is called the safety theme. A significant portion of the theme is dedicated to the use of exclusion regions, or barriers, which protect detonation-critical components from intended and unintended sources of energy in a broad range of environments. Stronglinks (analogous to safe/arm devices or SADs) are used in conjunction with barriers to protect the critical elements as well as discriminate a control signal to allow intended energy through the barrier at the appropriate time. Typically, Stronglinks are very robust mechanical components; however, electronic Stronglinks are occasionally proposed. This paper will discuss why stringent weapon requirements coupled with Sandia's nuclear detonation philosophy have made electronic Stronglinks an unattractive alternative for nuclear weapon" @default.
