- W2316956753 abstract "This paper analyses topographic data to understand the morphodynamic changes observed at the updrift margin of a relocated inlet (Ancao Inlet, Portugal). The inlet acted as a sediment trap to littoral drift with reduction of the beach face slope, transition from a reflective towards and intermediate beach state and higher occurrence of low tide terrace at the entire monitored area (up to 4 km from the inlet position). Volume increase at the upper beach (berm growth) rapidly occurred near the inlet position but shown a 2 to 4 years delay at the westernmost monitored areas (2 to 4 km from the inlet position). The continuity of inlet migration will lead to the eastern displacement of the accumulation forms. The profile robustness acquired after inlet relocation will be therefore reduced with time at the monitored area. Introduction Inlet relocation is a coastal management approach that consists on opening an inlet within its natural migration path to enhance water exchange and water quality or to avoid damage to infrastructures. This type of intervention can cause a partial interruption of the littoral drift with shifting of accumulation/erosion patterns at the inlet surroundings. The Ancao Inlet (Ria Formosa, South Portugal; Figure 1) was relocate in June 1997, 3.5 km to the west, to improve water exchange at the western part of Ria Formosa lagoon system. This study analyzes the morphodynamic changes observed at the updrift Ancao Peninsula (Figure 1) after inlet relocation, using topographic data collected before and after inlet relocation. Study Area Ancao Peninsula is the westernmost barrier of the Ria Formosa barrier island system (Figure 1). Tides in the area are semi-diurnal with a tidal range of 2.8 m and 1.3 m during spring and neap tides, respectively, and a maximum high tide level of about 1.8 m above mean sea level (MSL). The dominant incident wave direction is W-SW (71% of the year). E-SE waves correspond to waves generated by local winds, termed Levante, and occur during 27% of the year.
