- W2316961610 abstract "Stratospheric airship development efforts under the HiSentinel program have yielded a recent flight of a quarter-million cubic foot displ acement vehicle to an altitude of over 60,000 feet. The airship hull structural integrity was mai ntained throughout ascent and during float. Prior to flight, the hull underwent leakage rate testing over multiple days. It was instrumented and inflated to a differential pressur e of several inches of water while stationed at ground level. The rate measured during this test ing predicted the inflation gas leakage observed during flight. Improvement in the flight d uration of subsequent similar LighterThan-Air platforms will be realized by reducing the overall leakage rate of the airship hull and requires corresponding improvement of the leak qualification testing itself. The confounding factor of variation in actual test item volume from that modeled based on hull material strains can be reduced by using an integra l method to calculate average leak area. This analysis method coupled with currently available sensors can be used to quantify leak size confidently within a few days of testing, prov ided sufficient provisions are made in the construction of the test item for bulk gas temperat ure sensing." @default.
