- W2316974580 abstract "One way to enter Heather Fryer's complex argument about federal communities in the twentieth-century West is through her book's final chapter, where she reminds us that in 1950 Senator Pat McCarran proposed that the federal government create camps for the preventive detention of leftwing subversives. Had such camps been built and used, they would have been the direct descendants of the “inverse utopias” that are Fryer's subject. These “utopias” were four western American communities built and managed by the federal government or its agents. Three were direct products of World War II: the Topaz, Utah, internment camp for Japanese Americans; the heavily guarded atomic energy town of Los Alamos, New Mexico; and the war worker community of Vanport on the edge of Portland, Oregon. The fourth case is the Klamath Indian Reservation in southern Oregon, which long predated the wartime communities but which scarcely outlasted them because the reservation was liquated in 1954 and the Klamaths re-categorized from tribal members to “legal non-Indians.”" @default.
