- W2317163022 abstract "Fourteen species of fishes are identified as representatives of the Mt. Scott local fauna of Illinoian age in southwestern Kansas. The majority of these species do not live in southwestern Kansas today. The fish fauna probably lived in a clear-water environment with access to both gravelbottomed riffles and near-lacustrine habitat, according to inferences based on the present ecological requirements of the species. Ecological, geographical, and climatological considerations suggest that the fauna enjoyed more extensive permanent aquatic habitat and cooler (70? to 75?F) average summer temperatures than those characteristic of southwestern Kansas today. Observed morphological differences between fossil and Recent representatives of the species are few and of small magnitude, suggesting that these species have experienced only minor morphological changes since Illinoian times." @default.
