- W2317187877 abstract "Stored lipids provide an important source of reserve energy for wild bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) during periods of winter food stress in northern portions of their distribu- tion. We collected bobwhites during fall and winter from northeastern Kansas to determine their major fatty acids. Oleic and linoleic acids were the most abundant fatty acids in breast and adi- pose tissues of the 40 carcasses examined. No seasonal changes were detected in fatty acid composi- tion of bobwhites, although there were indications that such changes might be occurring in some birds. Differences in fatty acid composition of birds within a covey may be an indication of inter- covey movements of bobwhites. Several studies have highlighted the importance of body fat reserves for birds during periods of energetic stress. King (1972) discusses the adaptive values of periodic fat depositions to birds, e.g., for providing fuel for migra- tory flight, increased heat production for winter thermoregulation, and extra survival time when food supplies are scarce. Robel (1969) and Robel et al. (1974) studied body fat reserves and habitat management programs that help to maintain those reserves in bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) in Kansas. Recently, McRae and Dimmick (1982) evaluated the importance of adequate body fat reserves for breeding bobwhites, especially for females producing several clutches. However, the fatty acid composition of lipids of wild bob- whites has not been determined. Studies of fatty acids of passerines have detected differences in fatty acid composition among species (Walker, 1964), and with season (West and Meng, 1968a). Most of the seasonally-related changes in fatty acid composi- tion in birds are thought to be due to seasonal changes in diet (Moss and Lough, 1968; West and Meng, 1968b; Barnett, 1970). However, studies by West and Meng (1968a) and Tanhuanpaa and Pulliainen (1975) and those reported by Hazelwood (1972) question the importance of diet in determin- ing fatty acid composition of birds. Because little is known of the fatty acid composition of wild bobwhites, and because controversy surrounds the importance of dietary changes on fatty acid composition of birds, we determined the fatty acids of wild bob- whites collected during fall and winter in Kansas." @default.
