- W2317294552 abstract "Event Abstract Back to Event Analysis of Eye Movements During Substitution Test Performance B K Christensen1, A. Elahipanah2* and E M Reingold3 1 McMaster University, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences, Canada 2 University of Toronto, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Canada 3 University of Toronto at Mississauga , Department of Psychology, Canada Substitution tests are sensitive to frontal lobe dysfunction and reliably discriminate patients with schizophrenia from healthy individuals better than most other neuropsychological instruments. However, due to their multifaceted nature, substitution test scores cannot pinpoint the specific cognitive deficit that leads to poor performance. The current study investigated eye movements during performance on a substitution test in order to understand what aspect of substitution test performance underlies schizophrenia-related impairment. Twenty-four patients with schizophrenia and 22 healthy controls performed a computerized version of the Symbol Digit Modalities Test while their eye movements were being recorded by an Eyelink eye tracker. As expected, patients achieved lower performance scores. Moreover, analysis of participants’ eye movements revealed that patients made more visits to the key area for each response that they made. Patients also made more fixations in the key area every time they visited this area. Results suggest that patients’ impaired performance on coding tasks is related to poor memory for the symbol-digit associations and less efficient search for the target symbol in the key area.
