- W2317380558 abstract "A method to estimate better the winter sex ratios of buffleheads (Bucephala albeola) is proposed that accounts for the similar plumages of juvenile birds in the population. The field sex ratios for buffleheads wintering on the Laguna Madre averaged 54.6% males but was 69.5% males when corrected. The bufflehead, the smallest species of the sea duck tribe, Mergini, nests throughout much of the boreal forests of western Canada and winters exten- sively on the northern Atlantic and Pacific coastlines (Bellrose, 1976). Our purpose is to propose a correction method that may more accurately esti- mate the field sex ratios for buffleheads. Male sea ducks, including the buf- flehead, retain a female-like plumage into their second year, making these birds virtually indistinguishable from juvenile and adult females. Previous studies of bufflehead sex ratios thus reported only raw data that recognized, but remained uncorrected for, this bias (cf. Munro, 1942; Erskine, 1972). STUDY AREA.-Censuses were made on the upper portion of Laguna Madre, a primary lagoon paralleling the southern coast of Texas from Corpus Christi to Brownsville. Padre Island and South Padre Island form the seaward shore of the Laguna and shelter it from the Gulf of Mexico. The Laguna is a narrow embayment about 200 km in length and from 4.8 to about 8.0 km in width. Along the mainland shore, its depth reaches about 1 m whereas extensive flats covered by much less water adjoin the barrier islands. Hedgpeth (1947) described some physical features of the Laguna, its salinity, and its importance to fisheries. The Laguna is a major wintering ground for waterfowl of several species. Nearly 80% of the redhead (Aythya americana) population winters in this region (Weller, 1964) as do many thou- sands of lesser scaup (A. affinis) and pintails (Anas acuta). Buffleheads regularly overwinter in Laguna Madre, but little is known of their winter populations on the Texas Gulf Coast, a region well south of the species' major wintering concentrations. Another sea duck, the red-breasted mer- ganser (Mergus serrator), also reaches the southern extremity of its winter range in Laguna Madre. McMahan (1968, 1970) and Cornelius (1977) studied the submerged vegetation-principally shoal- grass (Halodule wrightii)-and its importance as food for redheads and other game ducks winter- ing on Laguna Madre." @default.
