- W2317496422 abstract "Article history: Received 9 Janua ry 2014 Accepted 9 February 2014 Availabl eonlin e1 5Februar y2014 Editor: G.F. Giudice We discuss the s ystematics of power counting in general effective field theories, focusing on those that are nonrenormalizable at leading o rder. As an illuminating example we consider chiral perturbation theory gauged under the elect romagnetic U(1) symmetry. This theo ry descri bes the l ow-energy interactions of the oc tet of pseudo-Gold stone bosons in QCD with photons and has been discuss ed extensively in the li terature. Peculiarities of the standard approach a re pointed out and it is sh own how these are resolved within our scheme. The presentation follows close ly our recent discussion of p ower counting for the elect roweak chiral Lagrangian. The systematics of the lat ter is reviewed and sh own to be consi stent with the concept of chiral dimensions. The results imply that na ive dimensional ana lysis (NDA) is incomplete in general e ffective field theories, while still reproducing the cor rect counting in special cases. © 2014 The Authors.
