- W2317542130 abstract "The oviducts undergo cyclic changes in their morphology and histochemistry, giving indirect evidence of ovarian activity, because oviductal growth and secretory activity are under the control of ovarian estrogens and progesterone (Chieffi et al., 1966, 1967). Studies on the oviducts of caecilians are scanty, limited mainly to morphological and histological observations. Wake (1970) studied the gross morphology and microanatomy of the oviducts of 17 genera and 46 species of caecilians. Exbrayat (1984) studied the histoarchitecture of the oviduct of a viviparous caecilian, Typhlonectes compressicaudus, during the reproductive cycle. No reports exist on the histochemistry of the caecilian oviduct. Studies on the histochemistry of the oviduct are of utmost importance, because the oviductal products deposited around the eggs are necessary for successful fertilization (Katagiri et al., 1982; Yoshizaki, 1985). In this paper we report the morphology, histology, histochemistry, and annual cycle of the oviduct in an oviparous caecilian, Ichthyophis beddomei (Caeciliidae). Adult Ichthyophis beddomei measuring 20-27 cm in total length were collected from Sringeri City, Karnataka State, India (13?6'N, 75?1'E) during the South West monsoon (June-August) of 1984. These caecilians are available only during the monsoon season, because in other seasons they burrow deep into the soil and are difficult to collect. Two hundred specimens were collected and kept in the laboratory under natural daylight, temperature, and humidity in the soil of their natural habitat, and were fed earthworms. Every month from June 1984 to May 1985, 5-6 specimens were sacrificed by decapitation. The oviducts were removed and fixed in Bouin's fixative for 24 h, dehydrated in graded series of ethyl alcohol, cleared in benzene, and embedded in paraffin. Paraffin sections 6 ,A thick were cut and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Histometric studies were carried out under" @default.
