The first constraint is a simple smoothing operator applied along the offset/angle axis within each common image gather. For the second constraint, we assume that seismic events are locally predictable. We extract prediction filters from the stacked image and design a regularization constraint that operates on constant offset/angle cross‐sections. The inversion is aimed at solving for a volume of artifact‐free common image gathers that can honor the input data. A synthetic example shows that the combination of the two constraints significantly improves the quality of common image gathers. The stacked image is also improved due to the structural regularization arising from the prediction filters.
