- W2317735306 abstract "This investigation focuses on the dynamics of free jets submitted to external acoustic modulations. The objective is to examine the perturbed flow, sort out the various types of modes and identify the convective, mixed or acoustic nature of the motion. Experiments are carried out in the low Reynolds number range because the perturbed flow is easier to extract but numerical simulations carried out in a companion paper at a higher Reynolds number are used to extend the present results to more practical situations. The jet dynamics are examined in the first few diameters from the nozzle for a single exhaust velocity and amplitude of forcing, and a large set of modulation frequencies. Transfer functions, instantaneous images, PIV fields and power spectral densities displayed in the form of space-frequency maps serve to characterize the flow dynamics. Results indicate that in the low Strouhal number range, the motion is dominated by convective modes, related to the passage of the large scale perturbations induced by the modulation. In an intermediate range of Strouhal numbers, the motion is of mixed-type, as the perturbations phase velocity is of the order of the speed of sound in a domain in the jet which extends to a finite distance L from the nozzle. Beyond that distance the phase velocity is again proportional to the mean flow velocity and a convective mode dominates the unsteady motion. In the upper Strouhal number range, the acoustic wave does not interact with the jet, and perturbations propagate with the speed of sound at the various locations considered. It is found that the motion induced by upstream modulations mainly depends on the jet Strouhal number StD but that consideration of the shear layer Strouhal number St is also required for a more complete mapping of the dierent regimes of motion. Finally, a possible explanation for the existence and value of the characteristic length L is proposed, in relation with the structure size generated at the nozzle lip." @default.
