• W2317767701 abstract "The fallen of the elderly is considered an important public health issue due to its frequency, associated morbidity and high social and economic costs, leading to increased dependence and moving into a nursing home. This is an exploratory and descriptive study, aiming to identify the profile of the women who have suffered falls in 2010 and the main effects suffered after falling among elderly living in a long-term institution in Belo Horizonte-MG. The compilation of data occurred in December 2010, using records of falls in existing medical records of 18 elderly women in the period from November 2009 to November 2010. The results show that 38% of the women who experienced falls were of an average age of 79.8 years old. The higher incidence of events was in their chambers (38.9%), then in the yard (22.2%) and cafeteria (22.2%). Regarding the consequences of the fall, 72.2% of the women suffered bruises and 5.6% fractures. We’ve concluded that the prevalence of falls among the elderly is high, although some of the possible factors associated with falls can be prevented. RESUMEN La caida entre los ancianos es considerada un problema de salud publica importante por su frecuencia, morbilidad y el alto costo social y economico, dando lugar a una mayor dependencia y al ingreso en un asilo de ancianos. Este estudio es exploratorio, descriptivo, con el objetivo de identificar el perfil de las mujeres que se cayeron en 2010 y las principales consecuencias sufridas despues de caer entre las ancianas que viven en instituciones de larga estancia en Belo HorizonteMG. Los datos fueron reunidos en diciembre de 2010, utilizando los registros de caidas en los registros medicos de 18 mujeres de edad avanzada en el periodo comprendido entre noviembre de 2009 y noviembre de 2010. Los resultados muestran que el 38% de las mujeres que experimentaron caidas tenian la edad media de 79,8 anos. La mayor incidencia de eventos fue en sus habitaciones (38,9%), a continuacion, en el patio (22,2%) y en el comedor (22,2%). En cuanto a las consecuencias de la caida, el 72,2% de las mujeres sufrio contusiones y el 5,6% fracturas. Se concluye que la prevalencia de caidas entre las ancianas es alta, aunque algunos de los posibles factores asociados a las caidas se pueden prevenir.
