• W2317773059 abstract "Food sharing is associated with important elements of social cohesion in both humans and other primates (the best-known are the African anthropoid apes of genera Pan: chimpanzees and bonobos). A growing body of evidence shows altruistic behaviours not only in primates but also in various animal taxa: eusocial insects like bees, ants and termites; carnivores like lions and wolves; some species of birds (e.g. crows), and vampire bats, among others. Nevertheless, the complexity that sharing food shows in humans makes this behaviour be ‘unique’ with respect to any other organism. Throughout our evolutionary history the food interchange can be viewed as a survival strategy of the group in front of the risks of an unpredictable surroundings, more than an act of altruism in biological sense, that benefits the receiver and has a cost in terms of biological efficacy (fitness) for the actor. As we will see, the main mechanisms proposed by the theory of evolution (kin selection, group selection and reciprocal altruism) lead us to consider that prosocial tendencies exist in humans because we are genetically predisposed to act prosocially. But apart from a biological predisposition, various investigations also point to an important socialization in the development of food exchange. This paper examines some of the behaviours that society defines as beneficial to others, with special reference to food altruism (food sharing). Besides, the recent debates about the nature and the origin of cooperative behaviour in our species are reviewed from an ecological and evolutionary perspective." @default.
