- W2317999931 abstract "A presentation of the materials science research program in Sweden as well as of the hardware available and being developed is given. The experiments are performed on different space vehicles: airplane in parabolic flight sounding rockets Spacelab GAS-cannisters on board the Space Shuttle. SSC has developed two reusable modules for sounding rockets. These modules contain different furnaces: mirror furnaces gradient furnaces rapid heating furnaces for pore formation experiments isothermal furnaces (heat-pipe type). The great effort now is to develop materials science experiment for the GAS-cannisters on board the Space Shuttle. SSC has reserved two GAScans to be flown early 1985 and early 1987 respectively. 1. Scientific topics within the microgravity field The Swedish space processing efforts started in the middle of 1975. Because of Sweden's traditionally strong position in materials science it was natural to take part and interest in the microgravity field. The aim was to get some basic insights into this new research area and later perhaps develop methods for processing new unique materials in space. The experiments in space could perhaps also be useful for acquiring knowledge of phenomena which are concealed on earth because of the gravitation. Today Sweden has four fields of interest within the microgravity materials science programme: Study of the solidification processes in metals e.g. alloys in immiscibility gaps pore formation in hydrogen saturated alloys directional solidification in eutectic structures dendritic growth Study of crystal growth Study of soldering phenomena (capillary streams) * Project Manager, Materials Science * * Project Engineer, Materials Science i Study of properties of liquid metals e.g. diffusion phenomena thermotransport heat conductivity electrotransport 2. Organisation of the Swedish materials science program There are two scientific groups involved in the Swedish materials science space program: the department of metals casting at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. The responsible scientists are professor Hasse Fredriksson and dr Torbjorn Carlberg. Professor Fredriksson conducts the metal solidification experiments while dr Carlberg performs experiments on crystal growth and soldering. the department of Physics at Chalmers Institute of Technology in Gotenburg. PhD Tore Persson studies diffusion phenomena in liquid metals. The scientists send their proposals to the governmental authority SBSA (Swedish Board for Space Activities). The task to execute the microgravity program, approved by SBSA, is commissioned to SSC, the Swedish Space Corporation. SSC:s responsibilities are: Project studies and planning" @default.
