- W2318043463 abstract "This book, the culmination of more than two decades of research and reflection on colonial Buenos Aires, is a decisive contribution to the history of Río de la Plata and to the study of colonial Latin American cities more generally. Lyman L. Johnson combines economic, social, cultural, and political history to elucidate the experience of the plebe of a city deeply affected by the historical process that unfolded in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries around the Atlantic basin and to understand their role in the process of independence. Late colonial Buenos Aires boomed thanks to Spanish colonial policies and the opportunities created by Atlantic economic and political trends. In this period, the population of Buenos Aires doubled due to two demographic trends that reflected the expansion of the economy: on the one hand, the city received a steady flow of free (mostly casta) migrants from other regions of the viceroyalty and, on the other, there was a sharp increase in the slave trade that translated into an explosion of the slave population in the city. A wide section of porteños (including people of very modest means) acquired generally a small number of slaves (one or two) that could work as artisans or in the service economy, providing their masters with an income. Because of the nature of the urban economy slaves could roam the city in search of work and enjoy a certain degree of physical freedom. The arrangements between masters and slaves meant that the latter could negotiate wages and had the capacity to save. As the number of slaves increased so did the cases of manumissions, and, in the process, the city of Buenos Aires “became more culturally distinct, more African” (p. 38)." @default.
