- W2318206945 abstract "This study examined the demographic and medical characteristics of women hospitalized with complications resulting from induced (illegal) and spontaneous abortions in Mali. This 1-year prospective observational study conducted in 15 hospitals and maternity clinics throughout the country represents 1 of the most comprehensive epidemiologic studies of abortion morbidity and mortality performed in Africa to date. Of the total 887 abortions analyzed 774 (87%) were spontaneous and 113 (13%) were induced. A higher proportion of women with induced abortions than spontaneous abortions were from urban areas (85% versus 73%) and women in the former group were about 4.5 years younger than women in the latter group. Women admitted after induced abortions were 6.5 times more likely to be unmarried than women who had spontaneous abortions. 2/3 of the women who had obtained induced abortions compared with under 1/3 of those who aborted spontaneously had had some education. In fact 45% of women in the former group had a secondary school education or above compared with 17% of those in the latter group. Nearly 40% of those in the induced abortion group were high school or university students. The mean gestational age at abortion was 10.9 weeks for women in the induced abortion group and 12.5 weeks for those in the spontaneous abortion group. The mean hospital stay was 4.3 days in the former group compared with 3.1 days in the latter group. Significantly more women admitted after an induced abortion required surgical interventions administration of oxytocin and blood transfusions. The most common method of abortion induction was the introduction of solid objects into the uterus. 2 deaths occurred in the induced abortion group (1.8% death-to-case rate) and 3 occurred among those with spontaneous abortions (0.4 death-to-case rate). Solutions that will reduce the incidence and the consequences of induced abortion such as improved availability of family planning services for unmarried women are urgently needed." @default.
