- W2318219067 abstract "The Northern Andes, region that includes parts of Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela, is mountainous environment of great ecological diversity. Variations in topography and altitude combine with periodic changes in meteorological conditions to produce what Ives (1979) has called a finely scaled mosaic of environmental conditions; one in which several microclimates may be identified in adjoining valleys and even within single valley. Plant life is highly sensitive to variations in rainfall, frost occurrence, and amount of sunlight that can occur over distance of few metres in mountain valley. Limitations affecting plant life lead to constraints on the number and variety of nimal species. These constraints, in turn, have served to l m t the human populations able to support themselves n mountai ous areas. Perhaps nowhere is the operation of Liebig's Law of the Minimum more visible than in mountainous areas where the variety of limiting factors is so great and their influence so profound. Such factors as rain-shadows, thermal belts, and soil formation can make the difference between highly productive horticultural area and barren one." @default.
