- W2318231347 abstract "PROBABLY more so than any other modern critic, F. O. Matthiessen legitimated the study of literature. Not only did he define and develop the basic analytical method-a close reading of texts keyed to the articulation of central American myths and symbols-but he also did much to establish the canon of major authors. Matthiessen was not, of course, the first person to examine the writings of T. S. Eliot, Emerson, Thoreau, Melville, Hawthorne, Whitman, Dreiser, and others now securely a part of literature as we know it; but in most cases, it was his critical work that proved to be crucial in bringing the author into focus and hence into the midst of scholarly debate. It comes therefore as somewhat of a surprise to discover that Henry James, the writer to whom Matthiessen devoted perhaps the most prolonged attention, and whose novels and stories he made especially significant for students of literature, was not, finally, a writer the critic appears to have greatly esteemed. Matthiessen seems to have remained, at best, highly ambivalent about James-and ambivalent in ways that testify not just to the writer's weaknesses but to the critic's own conflicted attitudes toward the relation between literary criticism and politics." @default.
