- W2318360090 abstract "The editors of this book open with two images that illustrate the way some Americans either fear or cheer the decline of religion. One is the public intellectual who corresponds with a similarly reasonable person about the prospects of organized religion declining to such a degree that the future will be dominated by the enlightened. To this class of Americans belong the likes of Thomas Jefferson, Walt Whitman, Walter Lippmann, and John Dewey. In the other camp is the American fearful about the decline of religion, who rises to stand before a throng of believers and laments the spread of godlessness and its consequences for the republic. Examples of this tendency run from Jonathan Edwards and Samuel Hopkins to William Jennings Bryan and Jerry Falwell. Both sides, though for distinct reasons, have detected and predicted the coming of unbelief in the United States. For this book's editors and contributors, secularization is synonymous with godlessness, and although the book challenges older theories, it defines secularization simply as a decline in religious authority. (However straightforward, this definition is hardly free from ambiguity since the editors do not identify religious authority; is it a religious establishment, church power independent of state sanction, the sway of religion in public opinion, or something else?)" @default.
