- W2318388544 abstract "A description is given of the male of Ostertagia dikmansi sp. n. recovered from the abomasum of white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus, in Pennsylvania. Additional males were also found in collections from 0. virginianus in Georgia, Louisiana, and Ontario, Canada. The new species is most similar to Ostertagia buriatica Konstantinova in Skrjabin and Orlov, 1934, and may be distinguished from it by the following characters: The new species has a spicule shaft with one long thick dorsal process and one shorter slender transparent ventral process, a straplike gubernaculum, and a dorsal ray which bifurcates near the distal fourth into two branches, each having a lateral branch near the distal third. Ostertagia buriatica has a spicule shaft with two thick processes of unequal length, a dagger-shaped gubernaculum, and a dorsal ray which bifurcates near the distal third into two branches, each having a lateral branch in the proximal half. A key shows how the new species can be distinguished from the other medium stomach worms of Odocoileus in North America. While examining ruminant medium stomach worms deposited in the U. S. National Museum Helminthological Collection, some unidentified male specimens were observed in association with Ostertagia odocoilei Dikmans, 1931, and 0. mossi Dikmans, 1931, which were collected from Odocoileus virginianus (Zimmerman, 1780) at four separate localities. Comparison of the males with the descriptive literature and authoritatively identified specimens of Ostertagia and related genera, convinced the writers that the males are an undescribed stomach worm of deer. Hence, they are described herein as Ostertagia dikmansi sp. n., named in honor of Dr. Gerard Dikmans, who, before retirement from our Laboratory, vastly contributed to our knowledge of ruminant parasites. The description is based on 11 males which were probably fixed in formalin. Before examination they were cleared in phenolalcohol or lacto-phenol. All measurements are in microns, unless otherwise indicated. All illustrations were made with the aid of a" @default.
