- W2318433147 abstract "A grammar presently used in the beginning classes of my college contains on page 61 a conversation in which one young man asks another, Gibt es bei euch nicht eine richtige Zeremonie?' student readily understands and accepts this as correct until he reaches page 68 where he learns, The negative form of the indefinite article ein is kein. Somewhat puzzled he turns to his instructor for an explanation of the discrepancy between the categorically stated rule and his text. But often enough the instructor proves to be a little uncertain himself regarding the German use of nicht ein. He may know that this form is the proper one whenever ein means one rather than a or an; the ein in the above quotation, however, is no numeral. If he now peruses the most commonly available reference books, frustration is still not impossible, for it is the negation that is usually discussed by grammarians, and only incidentally the negation cum indefinite article. This makes for many partial treatments of the nicht ein problem, but not for comprehensive ones. It is therefore perhaps useful to collate what is found in some of the major grammars and to comment on it in such a way as to explain most of the nicht ein cases that one may come across." @default.
