- W2318442875 abstract "IN RECENT YEARS economists have come to deal with dynamic systems of increasing size and complexity. The difficulty of analyzing such systems, however, appears to increase faster than does our ability to handle them with the aid of high speed computing equipment. As a consequence, it is becoming more and more important to secure information on the nature of those aspects of a system which, when present, enable us to treat a part of it separately from the rest or to deal with the relationship among particular subsystems as though it were independent of the structures within those subsystems. The latter question is that of aggregation, while the former is one whose theoretical importance is difficult to exaggerate; it concerns the conditions under which partial dynamics-or indeed, the dynamics of the economic system as a whole-can be treated without explicit concern for the larger system of socio-physical equations in which a particular structure is embedded. We may refer to this problem as one of partition, and we shall discuss it at length below. In an earlier paper, [8], Simon and Ando examined the behavior of linear dynamic systems with nearly completely decomposable matrices.2 They showed that, in the short run, such a system can be treated" @default.
